About Us

What is Kurume Kasuri?

Kurume Kasuri, invented around 1800 by Inoue Den, is renowned for its intricate patterns and unique texture. Characterized by simple, gentle designs, it features small, medium, and large patterns inspired by auspicious plants and animals. The fabric is made using high-grade indigo in a three-step dyeing process, resulting in beautiful contrasts between white and dark blue threads. Handwoven with a rhythmic clacking sound, it requires significant skill to ensure patterns match precisely. The cotton fabric becomes increasingly comfortable with wear and washing, making Kurume Kasuri not only visually striking but also highly practical and cherished in various everyday goods. Kurume Kasuri, a textile requiring tremendous effort and time across numerous intricate processes, carries over 200 years of tradition. Despite the tumultuous changes in the history of dyeing and weaving, its legacy has been continuously preserved. In recognition of its historical and artistic value, it was designated as an Important Intangible Cultural Property by the Japanese government in 1957. Widely incorporated into daily life through traditional and modern clothing, interior design, and accessories, Kurume Kasuri remains a beloved textile that represents Japan to this day.
