My apprenticeship in Hirokawa, Japan, learning Karume Kasuri with master weaver Kazuo-san and his exceptionally skilled team at Sakata Orimono was transformative. Their deep knowledge of this intricate craft—hand-tying, natural indigo dyeing, and weaving kasuri fabric—was truly inspiring. The care and generosity they showed in sharing their expertise has shaped my understanding of the relationship between tradition and craftsmanship, industry, and innovation. The experience allowed me to fully appreciate the artistry, precision, and cultural significance behind Karume Kasuri, leaving me with deep respect for the craft and those who have dedicated their lives to preserving it.
Thanks to partnering organizations like UNA Labs, who provided translation services and invaluable support, we were able to fully immerse ourselves in the experience. Beyond the craft of Karume Kazuri, we explored the rich culture of the region by attending local festivals, visiting shrines and museums, and experiencing the exhilarating Yamakasa festival in Fukuoka. We were also able to take part in a craft tour of the region, where we got to meet many skilled artisans making tea, incense and washi paper to name just a few!
Sakata Orimono and the guest house Orige, where we were staying, are pillars of the community, and there were many opportunities to connect with local families. Our time sharing meals with the Sakata Orimono team during lunch breaks created genuine bonds of friendship and left me with a deep appreciation for their warmth and hospitality.
I am so grateful for this experience and believe it has altered me for the better and shaped me as an artist and designer. From the meticulous craft techniques to the richness of the community and culture, I return with a renewed perspective on heritage textiles and their place in contemporary design.
